Tech-Check: Commonly Unknown Tech Terms

Not many people are very familiar with the Internet and the new vocabulary it has brought about. On the web there are many words, buzz words as they are called, that often get thrown around and the definitions of them are not known. Below are a few of the commonly unknown words on the Internet:

B2B — short for business-to-business e-commerce refers to commerce that is conducted between companies instead of between companies and individuals.

Bandwidth — is measured in bits per second and is the amount of data that can be sent over a network connection in a period of time. The bandwidth that is used on a server denotes the amount of traffic that is transmitted from the website.

Content management — is a general term used for processing content. Catalog data is an example of content managed information because it is frequently updated and information can be stored, controlled, edited and managed in an organized manner.

Data Migration — the transfer or movement of data from one database to another database. Data migration can also occur with software or hardware moving data from one version to another without the loss of information.

Dynamic Content— when used in computer terms means capable of action or change. Dynamic information can be changed automatically based on database or user information.

E-commerce — is Internet facilitated commerce of goods and services. Online stores that sell products or services on the Internet are also known as E-commerce websites.

Microblogging occurs when a brief post of a personal blog are sent. These brief posts or microposts can be sent to a group of subscribers or can be made public on a website to increase website traffic and search engine rankings. Online marketing is also commonly referred to as Search Marketing and Search Engine Marketing.

Phishing is the act of attempting to acquire sensitive information using fraudulent tactics. Typically phishers falsely claim to be a trustworthy entity such as a bank or payment companies (such as PayPal or eBay) in e-mails or instant messaging and direct people to their illegitimate website. Sensitive information that is commonly phished includes: usernames, passwords and even credit card information. All of the sensitive information that is gathered in phishing can be used for identity theft.

Plug In is an application that is installed as part of a Web browser. Plug-Ins offer additional features to a web browser that can be used to support information like sound and video.

Podcasting is a series of digital media files that can be viewed or heard on the Internet and downloaded on a computer or MP3 player. Podcasts are typically updated frequently so Internet users can download at their own leisure.

RSS feeds – or Really Simple Syndication as it stands for is used for notifying users of website content updates. RSS feeds are typically used on websites that frequently update their content such as blogs and podcasts to keep their registered users up to date on any changes or new information.

Scalability — is a term that refers to the ability of a system whether it be software, hardware or even a website to adapt to increased demands. A properly built website is scalable and will be built based on the company’s current needs while keeping in mind future company needs.

Search Engine Marketing, also known as Online Marketing, are tactics that are performed with the goal of increasing traffic to a website which will in turn increase a website’s ranking.

SEO — short for Search Engine Optimization is when a website is created with the specific purpose of showing up high in search engine results when specific keywords are looked up. SEO websites are designed and built around known search engine algorithms the search engines use to rank websites for certain keywords

Social bookmarking allows Internet users to store, organize, search and manage bookmarks of web pages. Users of social bookmarking websites can view other user’s bookmarks and share their bookmarks with users. Registered users can view bookmarks by category or tags working like a search engine. Popular Social Bookmarking websites include: Deli.cio.us and Stumble Upon.

Static Content when used in computer terms means fixed content or information that does not change. Most web pages are considered static web pages.

Tagging is the practice of attaching descriptive labels to online content. Tags allow users to search or browse website content more effectively.

Viral Marketing uses word of mouth to bring visitors to a website. Viral marketing done via blogs and social networking websites can bring in mass amounts of visitors to a website.

Web 2.0 a concept which refers to the second-generation or next generation of the web. With the web constantly changing so are the services which are available. Web 2.0 web design is aimed more at creativity, the sharing of information and user collaboration. Services which are included in the Web 2.0 movement involve web-based communities and include: blogs, wikis and social networking sites.

Webinar or web conference is a seminar offered by a company that is conducted live on the Internet. Each webinar participant joins other participants on the Internet either by a downloaded application or a web-based application.

Wiki is part of the Web 2.0. Wikis are websites that contain resource information online similar to an encyclopaedia. The content contained in wikis is added and edited collectively by registered users. Since any registered user can change content wiki websites are operated based on collaborative trust. The most common and well known Wikis is Wikipedia, although there are many new ones that are increasing in popularity.

So, the next time we come across these, there’ll be no need to Google it.
