This lady has travelled from Hasanpur in Uttar Pradesh to the capital in search of work. The wall at the back? That is her work.
She has three children, aged 2 and 3. She smiles coyly when asked if she plans on sending her children to school. She holds one of them and poses for me with great hesitation, but no less beauty.
India has one benefit that nearly no other country can offer-Inexpensive Labour. But this doesn’t account for holistic development of the nation. How can human development and equity in living standards be ignored? The government must ensure that education and employment opportunities reach all. And not just on paper.
