The Double Marginalization Of Being A Woman And Homosexual

By Anila Kurian:

On a free day, I decide to chill at home, sip on my coffee and read Marie Claire. The December month’s issue focuses on ‘why gay women have it tougher‘, along with winter fashion and party fever stuff.

Like most people, I found the cover story attention grabbing and started to read. The article talks about different Indian women who finally came out of the closet and how they are sent back to the closet because of the society. The women in the article talk about gay men finding it a lot easier to show off their sexuality, not mainly because it’s legal, but just because they are men.

As I read on, the article encourages more women to come out the closet, even though the mentality of the people might remain the same. Having this thought in mind, I turn around to ask my mom what she would do if she found out that I was interested in women. She gives me a dirty look and told me that she will kick me out of the house. I was quite stunned when I heard that. I have never really talked about stuff like this to my parents, but I never thought they would be one of the people who thought like that.

I protested saying that it’s not my fault that I am attracted to women, it’s inbuilt in me. [I am not gay, just said so to hear my mom’s response]. She refused to listen and said that we are born with so many inbuilt characteristics, but we mold ourselves so that we are socially accepted.

This seriously got me thinking. Yes, it’s true that you can change your inbuilt self, but don’t you think that being homosexual is what you are, and it’s something that you shouldn’t be ashamed of? The law may have allowed the homosexuals to walk around free in the country, but how many are actually doing it? Honestly, I don’t blame them to hide themselves away from the people, if they had my mom’s mentality.

The thought that I’m still pondering upon-would this mentality that people have ever change? Would we ever let people be how they want to be-who they truly are? Would the homosexuals lock themselves in the closet and stay scared to ever come out?

If you actually answered ‘yes’ for any of these questions, think about it if the situation was reversed on to you.
