The world bade farewell to the previous millennium, uncertain if it would make through January 1st 2000. The much hyped Y2K scare threatened that the world would completely crumble and that the earth would disappear into darkness again. It was assumed that all the computers in the world would crash and that the world will then end. Twelve years hence, the earth is still alive and ironically more technologically advanced than ever. 2000 came and went with very little brouhaha. And here we are now, facing yet another doomsday prediction!
The 5125 years long Mayan Calendar is said to end on 21st December 2012, hence marking the end of the world. The prophecies of Nostradamus add to the rage. Nostradamus has been of immense interest to the media ever since 9/11. According to sources, he had predicted the occurrence of the unfortunate events in one of his quatrains. As spooky as it may sound, several academics have fought against this belief blaming the media and people for misinterpreting his words.
Many astrologers and seers have claimed to have interpreted Nostradamus’s prophecies regarding the end of the world in 2012. The total solar eclipse of May 2012 is said to have been predicted by Nostradamus, thus convincing them that the predictions regarding the end of the world would also be genuine. However, as stated by academics and scholars, such reports are just misinterpreted and hyped. After all, how could a man who lived in the 1500s have predicted such?
Science has indicated that Earth’s magnetic field strength is decreasing and that a pole shift is bound to happen over the years. However contrary to what is shown in majority of TV shows regarding the doomsday predictions, the pole shift takes a long period of time, often hundreds of years. It is not a phenomenon that will happen overnight as predicted by non- scientific sources. Only a high impact cause such as an approaching asteroid or comet could cause a shift in the Earth’s axis. NASA scientists, however, reject all such reports claiming that such an incident would have been tracked down years ago, had it happened.
According to latest archaeological surveys and reports, the newly dug-out remains of Mayan civilization indicated dates beyond 2012. This could effectively prove that the Mayan Calendar is clearly out of the picture as far as claims of the doomsday are concerned. Date-setters, who had predicted dates for the end of the world earlier, have been proven wrong, time and again. And hopefully, this time it would be no different!
With the advancement in technology, overpopulation of nations which leads to poverty and unemployment, natural disasters and inflation, the speculations about the world coming to an end are increasing. However as several other sources mention, it might not be the end of the world as such, but the end of the world as we know it. A new transformation is what is in store for us, as per several reports. Let’s wait and watch!
