Generally when a few talented people get along on a particular project, the outcome is bound to be good…generally! And that’s what has happened with ‘Lootera’. Vikramaditya Motwane, Anurag Kashyap, Amit Trivedi, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Adil Hussain (and not to forget O Henry) these names speak out loud for themselves.
Lootera starts at the backdrop of Bengal of 1953. Vikramaditya Motwane has taken care of minute detailing of the time of newly independent India, whether it is about art direction or introduction of electricity in peoples’ houses or even the British English accent of Indian people; each aspect appeared meticulous. At least this was well expected from the “Udaan”- fame director. The best thing about the movie is that it is not at all a regular senseless movie or any other repetitive love story. The story has a feel and the movie has a certain pace of its own. The whole movie runs at that pace, not a minute faster and neither a minute slower.
Casting wise, Lootera has hit the right cords. And performance wise Ranveer Singh, to begin with, was very good. He has all the calibre of being the next Vinod Khanna of Bollywood; the manly body language and a strong performance along with a captivating screen presence. Vikrant Massey who plays the role of Ranveer’s friend in the movie was fitting in the role as well as the actor who played Sonakshi’s father. Adil Hussain and Divya Dutta were good with their cameo but it was Sonakshi Sinha’s performance which has swept the audience. By far, this has got to be the best performance of Sonakshi Sinha till date in her career. It has not only got to do with her dialogues but also her powerful performance, expressions and the non dialogue serious scenes which she has carried off with such an ease and brilliance; of course credit goes to the director for bringing out such a performance.
Let’s talk about the soul of this movie, its music. Amit Trivedi, at present, is one of the finest musicians which India has and he has proved it once again. His jodi with Amitabh Bhattacharya is working wonders for the Hindi Film industry. Lootera hardly has a comic scene and yet you won’t get bored. It also doesn’t have an effect that will lead you to shedding tears and yet it has a soul and one can experience the emotions conveyed by the director and performers. Basically it is a romance genre love story but it won’t be giving you the feel of Romeo and Juliet or a Veer Zaara effect. Having said that, the small details of an unspoken love story will leave you smiling.
I give the movie a 3.75. If you are fed up of those senseless movies and want something mature yet soothing, Lootera will serve the purpose this weekend.
