DEBATE: Should Indian Voters Have The “Right To Recall” Their Elected Candidates?

Right to recall is a proposed Indian law that will help empower citizens by allowing them to replace corrupt MLA or MP by filing a petition and garnering votes of others from the constituency.

[symple_column size=”one-half” position=”first”]It is a tool of democracy: The request for this law has been long pending and its need is felt on a daily basis in these times when ministers don’t care about their constituencies anymore. Right to recall will put the system of efficient working and best practices in place to allow a chance for expression for every voice of dissent. Every vote is important and voters shouldn’t wait for five years before replacing a bad candidate.[/symple_column]
[symple_column size=”one-half” position=”last”]It is an instrument of chaos: Apart from already adding to a large number of complications in the Indian Democracy, right to recall will also put people away from the idea of democracy. It will promote faster recall of candidates but with fresh elections that will cause chaos more than good. People who don’t go to vote in the country out of indifference can’t be expected to vote again for the removal of a bad candidate. We do need quality systems in place but right to recall is just cumbersome to implement and manage.[/symple_column]
