India produces almost 900 movies a year and the sheer length and breadth of the industry is dizzying. Cinema is a big crowd drawing magnet in India; it is the common string which binds the diverse country into a colourful thread. On one hand we have movies like Ship of Theseus which go beyond the conventional and on the other, we have pure entertainers of the Khans and the Kapoors. Recent reports have suggested that the new government will attempt to reverse the ‘cultural degradation’ in movies and promote films that showcase ‘traditional Indian values’. Do we need that? Do we need directors who tell us the story that the traditions suggest? How justified it is to cut a movie just because it goes against the norms and culture?
