In his session at the ZEE Jaipur Literature Festival, 2015, journalist and author of ‘2014: The Election That Changed India’ Rajdeep Sardesai talked brazenly about his early encounters with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when Mr. Modi was still a pracharak, and how he saw the rise of the larger than life, publicity doting politico. Sardesai believes that the Indian media has found a comfort zone in not being critical about Narendra Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots. He also talked about the Congress and Rahul Gandhi’s downright failure in understanding and tapping into the aspirations of young India, going on to advise Gandhi to leave national politics and work locally in Uttar Pradesh for 5 years, win elections and then think national.
Youth Ki Awaaz caught up with Sardesai to find out more about what he believes was the systematic demonization of the English media by Modi in a post 2002 world, the pros and cons of being a post 1990 generation, his advice to Narendra Modi and the independence of media – of whatever is left.
