Delhi is a melting pot of cultures. People from all over the country come here to live the big dream. It is a city that belongs to everyone, and no one at the same time. From food festivals, art and culture shows, to merchandise, each state offers a little something to it, and we all revel in it. Why is it then that in a city like Delhi, ethnic discrimination and stereotyping still exist?
Brian Khamboi came to Delhi from Manipur to start a new life. What he ended up with was being called “Chinki”. In this video, Brian talks about the ethnic discrimination still very much rampant in the capital. Despite the fact that every year thousands of people from North Eastern states migrate to other parts of the country to study or work, they are constantly made to feel like outsiders. Often addressed as “Nepali”, “Chinese”, and the likes, they are never made to feel like a part of the society.
Watch how Brian sends a powerful message through his slam poetry as he talks about his experience of being a “Chinki” in Delhi, and hopefully, you’ll understand why it’s not right to call someone that. Ever. Even as a joke.
