[Y]Ral: This Award-Winning Video Will Make You Question Everything About Your ‘Ordinary’ Life

By Sanskriti Pandey:

I’ll summon Voltaire to describe what I understood from this powerful short film: “The comfort of the rich depends upon an abundant supply of the poor.” On a dreary morning, a man begins his ordinary day in an ordinary life. Except, nothing about the mirror, the coat rack, the taxi, or the elevator is ordinary. These are humans conveniencing humans. Each becomes a lifeless object in a perpetual clockwork cycle. A subtle commentary on capitalistic extremes, this one film, in all its silence, portrays our nonchalance to the fact that each of us dunks someone’s head in the water to stay afloat.

Have we subtly been fed the rationalisation that we can not move forward without oppressing others? Have we become, in all our little everyday acts, someone’s doormat? ‘El Empleo’ was directed by Santiago Bou Grasso, and has won over 75 international awards since its release in 2008. Watch this fantastic short film and tell us what you feel.
