Chimamanda Adichie Ngozi has long been lauded for her captivating writing and powerful speeches on human nature, the effects of politics on people, and feminism. Her TEDx talk about feminism in 2012 was highly acclaimed, and her books have won awards and been turned into films – and this powerhouse of a woman doesn’t seem like she’ll be stopping her impressive streak of achievements any time soon.
She recently delivered a speech at Wellesley College’s commencement event. In this video, she impresses on the importance of personal choice and of shaping the world to fit you, and not the other way around. She tells us that victimhood is not a virtue, and that privilege is blinding. We learn how she broke away from expectations to follow her passions and “make an effort”. And of course, we learn the value of lipstick and online shopping.
Candid, honest, and full of delightful humour, Ngozi’s newest address is a must-watch.
