While we don’t realise the potential of technology to invade into our personal space, the webcam on our laptops or the camera on our phones leave us exposed to hacking, recording, spying and voyeurism. If you think this only happens to ‘other people’ and you’re immune to cyber crimes that happen off private chat sessions or with even the mere accessibility to a camera, a quick web search will hand you a cartload of news stories, articles and awareness films that highlight how the victims were caught unawares and were just as callous or uncaring about the issue as you are. A 19 year old student reported falling prey to something similar this April, and was sent photos clicked from her own webcam to her email.
As cyber crime elevates in numbers (here are Indian statistics), there is a growing need to sensitise the average person to the critical importance of safety measures.
