In an ideal world Roger Federer and Serena Williams would be earning the same amount of money. In an ideal world wage gap between genders for the same work would not exist. In a 2014 BBC study, it was found that women are paid 30% less than men in professional sports.
While many sports pay the same prize money to both genders, such as the four grand slams, there are many more like football, boxing that perpetuate this sexist tradition.
The infographic below takes a hard look at the wage gap discrimination in various sports.

Not that yoou will ever agree, but mens sport generates far higher revenue than women’s sport in general. Tennis s one of the few exceptions I know of.
For example, just go out on the street and ask people who exactly knows about Marta, the great female soccer exponent you have mentioned in your article.

The best male football player is better than the best female football player. The fastest man in the world is faster than the fastest woman in the world. The best male snowboarder in the world can do tricks with a higher degree of difficulty than the best female snowboarder in the world. The best male golf player can drive farther than the best female golf player in the world. The list is endless. These are facts. Men are better at sports. Men have more strength, stamina, speed, skill. That is why people pay more to watch men play, and that is why there is more coverage of male sports and they get paid more.
