Posts talking about how magical travelling can be often flood our social media pages. We travel “not to escape life, but for life to not escape us.” As poetic as that sounds, that is just what happened with Hans Dalal.
Hans was once a sound engineer with his own music studio and has worked with the likes of Vishal-Shekhar and Trilok Gurtu. But a trip to Kanha National Park and spotting his first tiger changed the course of the rest of his life.
Coming back to the studio didn’t seem right to him after that, “My body was in the city, but my heart was in the jungle,” he says. So he went back, for good. A guy who was born with cerebral palsy, a congenital disorder that affects motor functions, and couldn’t walk till he was 7, is now a full-time tiger conservationist.
Hans runs an organisation called PROWL (Preservation of Wild Landscapes), and has dedicated his whole life to defeat the root cause of the depreciating numbers of tigers, that is poaching. And he’s not trying to catch them and put them in prison. He’s reaching out to tiger poachers and helping them earn a livelihood from other mediums. He is also doing some incredible stuff to make the work of forest officers a lot easier, and in improving methods of tiger tracking.
