‘Every institution in India has failed in the past half century – from judiciary to the executive, to the legislature.’ This line, coming from one of India’s most well-known Senior Advocates and current President of the Supreme Court Bar association of India, Dushyant Dave, is a line that will haunt Indians for the coming many years.
[envoke_twitter_link]Dushyant Dave spoke about Accountability and Human Rights in India[/envoke_twitter_link] at the London School of Economics and Political Science in October 2015, and he sadly noted that crimes against women, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and minorities are steadily on the rise in the world’s largest democracy. When on one hand a man is murdered in Dadri for possessing beef, on the other hand, Dalit children are being burnt to death. Survivors of the 1984 Sikh riots are yet to get justice, Kashmiri Pandits are yet to be rehabilitated. Despite all these gross human rights violations, he says that the Judiciary itself is failing the country by letting criminals walk free without a trial in cases like the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case.
Dave also goes on to add that [envoke_twitter_link]these gross human rights violations are the truth about India[/envoke_twitter_link]. He also adds that Prime Minister Modi is trying to present a different image of the country, which he feels ignores these violations. For him, ‘India is under a siege’ by right wing groups and [envoke_twitter_link]all attempts are being made to scare the minorities into systematic suppression[/envoke_twitter_link].
