Tonight, they step off this plane as refugees, but they walk out of this terminal as permanent residents of Canada.’

Justin Trudeau’s statement is a historic moment for Canada and for peace around the world. While many in Europe continue bickering over taking in Syrian refugees, Trudeau has come out as a champion for their cause. After Angela Merkel, Trudeau came out in full support of displaced Syrian people, now homeless because of a raging war in Syria. While many are trying to justify that the influx of these refugees is simply going to burden first world countries who already have a booming population, what many forget is that these refugees are people who have no place to go to, because their houses have been bombed or burnt down or are now political refugees because they stood up against the Assad regime.

Justin Trudeau spoke about his decision in the Canadian Parliament, putting forth the fact that Canada isn’t defined by someone’s skin colour or religion, it is a country where anyone can be a Canadian. His decision is a sharp contrast to many countries that have resorted to terror tactics to scare Syrians from their borders, or have decided to simply keep mum about the issue.
