This was conveyed by Singh, Minister for Development of North Eastern Region, when a group of North-East students from Delhi University called on him yesterday (April 17th).
Singh told the students that in Jawaharlal Nehru University, the Ministry of DoNER has already acquired a piece of land in the campus and after some delay on account of forest clearance from Delhi administration, the land is now ready to be used for a North-East hostel.
Similarly, he said, for the students of Delhi University, the Ministry of DoNER had written to the Vice-Chancellor to identify a piece of land where a hostel could be brought up to accommodate students from the North-East studying in different colleges affiliated with the University.
The proposal for the same was first mooted during the UPA government’s tenure in 2013.
Accommodation has been a major concern for students from the region living in the capital.
Women, especially, have complained of harassment at the hands of landlords, apart from being denied accommodation.
In 2009, a girl from the region was killed and her body was burnt by her neighbour in Delhi’s Munirka which has a less than savoury reputation when it comes to treatment of people from the North-East.
The students, during the informal interaction, discussed a wide range of issues with Singh.
Responding to a suggestion by students, Singh said he saw merit in the demand that guest houses in Delhi should earmark a certain number of beds for accommodating patients from eight states of the North-East as well as the poor students who come to Delhi to appear for different examinations.
He said this issue will be taken up with the Delhi based Resident Commissioners (RCs) of North Eastern states.
