A 22-year-old Post-Graduate student of Kurukshetra University allegedly committed suicide yesterday leaving behind a note that blamed one of her classmates, Surinder Singh, for sexually harassing her. Her body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her hostel room.
The suicide note that the victim has purportedly left behind has been retrieved from her hostel room revealing the ordeal the 22-year-old had been facing for some time. Accusing Singh of sexually harassing her, she further brings light to how he harassed her by sending messages, calling her and pressurizing her for marriage.
Investigating officer ASI Kuldeep Singh, stated that the accused had been arrested and investigations were under full swing to make sure justice could be delivered at the earliest.
Before taking the extreme step, the girl had called her mother, asking her to come to her hostel immediately. On rushing to the location from a village near Pehowa, she and her son, discovered the 22-year-old hanging from the ceiling fan.
The girl was rushed to LNJP Civil hospital where she was declared brought dead, police said, adding that the body was handed over to her family after post-mortem and was cremated in the afternoon at her village.
Sushma Sharma, the Chief Hostel Warden, said that the girl had told her parents about the harassment she was facing from a fellow Post-Graduate student. Her father had even spoken to accused Surinder Singh regarding the same earlier. However, as per the hostel warden, she did not report her problems to the university authorities.
According to her friends, the victim had planned to take action yesterday by ending her silence and talking to her teacher but for some reason had deterred her plans, returning to her room in the afternoon.
The wardens said that they advised students at the time of admission to report issues of harassment or ragging immediately to the university authorities so that untoward situations like these could be avoided and remedial actions taken.
The police revealed that the victim’s and the accused’s mobiles would be checked for further leads in the case.
Raising concerns about women’s right to access public places like universities, work spaces and the city, this unfortunate suicide has forced the authorities yet again to re-consider how communities can be made more inclusive and how help can be made available better so that students don’t feel isolated while facing crimes and harassment.
