West Bengal Elections 2016: What Does The Youth Want?

By Sreyashi Choudhury and Suman Majumdar For Youth Ki Awaaz:

With Assembly elections currently on in West Bengal, Youth Ki Awaaz spoke to young voters and leaders in order to find out what the youth hopes and expects.

The overall mood appeared somber, with two phases of elections already over. Young voters decried the lack of jobs, among other things, although the government’s initiatives towards social welfare were appreciated.

Young leaders from the Opposition targeted the government on all fronts, blaming it for poor infrastructure to the deteriorating law and order situation. However, those from ruling party TMC alleged that the former Left Front government had destroyed industry in the state.

While the collapse of Vivekananda flyover and the Narada tapes exposing alleged corruption on the part of TMC have made the party unlikely to do as well as the previous time, its reign appears secure for the time being. Nevertheless, the discontent amongst the youth is something the party would do well to watch out for in the future.
