If you are among the thousands of Indians, who have had the misfortune of dealing with the Indian judicial system, you would realise how broken it is. There is bureaucratic red-tape aplenty, chaotic and crowded courts while cases can take forever to get resolved. India’s longest running case, a property dispute between the descendants of Raja Rajkrishna Deb, a 17th-century landlord, has been going on for a staggering 175 years.
Not all cases in India span centuries, but a worrying number take far too long to be resolved. 10% of India’s total pending cases have been in courts for 10 years or more. This means that, while millions of people are being denied speedy justice, many others are languishing in jails as they await their verdicts. Some people also accuse the legal system of not acting with sufficient urgency – courts in India go for a long summer vacation during which no cases are heard. But perhaps, as this video shows you, the Indian legal system is in the state it is in, for a much simpler reason – India simply doesn’t have enough judges.
