A brand new survey has revealed some surprising things, like the majority of men do not actually send dick pics, and that there’s a rather looooong list of nicknames they use to refer to their penis, from random everyday objects to industrial terms to military designations.
Called the Great Indian Penis Survey, it was conducted by Agents of Ishq with 1023 participants, nearly all of them male, but some of whom identified with another portion of the gender spectrum. It is the first ever attempt to gauge each survey-taker’s relationship with their penis. The aim? “To begin talking about our own relationship with ourselves in terms of sex and the body,” rather than as objects.
Replete with some very fun and quirky infographics, the survey covers personal levels of comfort, confidence, and the various influences on one’s views about their body – porn being the weightiest of them all. It also talks about how growing up, and personal relationships have altered way they feel about their penis.
So far, there’s a lot of emphasis laid on how women experience their gender and their sexuality, leaving men’s bodies in the “the usual space of swear words, nudge-nudge-wink-wink jokes and cliches about prowess.” Which is why it’s nice to see a survey cover body image issues experienced by men. A significant 71% of them were still not entirely comfortable with the length, girth or shape of their penis, and 53% of them tended to compare with others.
What’s even more interesting is how persons of different sexual orientations (including bisexual, gay and asexual) were invited to participate – which definitely expands the discussion far beyond the realm of heterosexuality. 96% of the survey-takers were male, 2% were female, and it was also taken by trans, intersex and non-binary persons. Although the sample size is relatively small, the survey is a good start to discussing issues that men face with regards to their bodies.
