Indians Cheering For Dipa Karmakar Prove That Win Or Lose, Our Pride Stands Strong!

By Saswati Chatterjee:

At midnight on August 14 2016, a nation was united in cheering for a young Indian at the Olympics. She finished 4th in the Vaults finals, but no matter how much she lost by, it was clear that Dipa Karmakar had won India’s heart and fired up fresh interest in the condition of sports in the country.

Dipa is not only the first Indian female gymnast at the Olympics, but the first Indian gymnast in 52 years! She is also one of the only five female athletes in the world to successfully perform the ‘Produnova’ or ‘vault of death’ – an extremely difficult gymnastics vault.

These Tweets show that people had Dipa’s back, no matter what!

“You’ve inspired millions.”

The effort was evident to everyone.

The odds were against her but…

A nation united!

Other sportspeople too joined in the raise

She has certainly broken many of those!

Happy Independence Day to you, Dipa!

To continue showing your support for Dipa and our other amazing athletes, join Youth Ki Awaaz’s #CheerForIndia campaign! Just singing the national anthem or saluting the tricolour doesn’t cut it anymore, we need to back the people who’ve carried the flag all the way to Rio!
