At midnight on August 14 2016, a nation was united in cheering for a young Indian at the Olympics. She finished 4th in the Vaults finals, but no matter how much she lost by, it was clear that Dipa Karmakar had won India’s heart and fired up fresh interest in the condition of sports in the country.
Dipa is not only the first Indian female gymnast at the Olympics, but the first Indian gymnast in 52 years! She is also one of the only five female athletes in the world to successfully perform the ‘Produnova’ or ‘vault of death’ – an extremely difficult gymnastics vault.
These Tweets show that people had Dipa’s back, no matter what!
“You’ve inspired millions.”
@DipaKarmakar winning a medal isn't as important as creating a history. You have inspired millions.
