“PINK” Trailer Asks Uncomfortable Questions On How Women Survivors Are Shamed In Court

By  Shambhavi Saxena:

The trailer for Soojit Sircar’s new film ‘Pink’ just dropped, and it is freaking intense.

Any woman who’s ever had to go to court to follow up a case on sexual harassment will feel an uncomfortable tension watching this. From the lawyer’s invasive questions, the inappropriate insinuations, and character assassination of the survivor – it’s almost too real to handle.

Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, Andrea Tariang and Angad Bedi, the film appears to focus on how India’s legal system deals with sexual violence – an issue that is rather pertinent to our times. There have been several watershed moments in the fight to end violence against women, and 2012 was definitely among them. Mechanisms were improved, laws were added, but four years later, women still cannot be assured of safe passage through all spaces at all times.

Which begs the question – what exactly are our courts doing? Why is justice still delayed and denied? Hopefully the film will be able to explore some of these questions, and do it in a sensitive, intelligent and nuanced way.
