Shocking Video Of Akali Dal Leaders Beating A Pregnant Nurse Is Why VIP Culture Is Toxic

By Sourya Majumder:

This shocking 35 second CCTV footage, posted by ANI news on Twitter, shows Paramjit Singh, a leader from Punjab’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal, and his son Gurjit Singh assaulting a Ramandeep Kaur, an eight weeks pregnant nurse at the Gupta Nursing Home in Bagha Purana Town in Moga. According to the nurse, the assault came after she asked the two men to vacate seats ‘meant for staff’, and wait at the reception. The duo then began slapping and pushing the woman and shouting at the gathered staff, with the father blatantly proclaiming his position.
The police have booked both Paramjit, husband of sarpanch Daljit Kaur, and his son under Sections 451 (house trespass to commit an offence), 323 (punishment for causing hurt voluntarily), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intent in crime) of the IPC. However, according to Bagha Purana station house officer Gurmail Singh, the duo is absconding.
While political rivals have, unsurprisingly, attempted to gain political mileage against the Akali Dal by condemning the incident, it is only one in a long line of similar abuses perpetrated by celebrities, politicians, and other VIPs. It goes to show how deeply rooted this toxic ‘VIP Culture’, supported by a ridiculously inflated sense of power and entitlement, is in our society.
