If North Campus Seems Clean These Days, These Students From Miranda Should Be Thanked

By Simran Kapoor:

To some people, the morning of September 10, 2016 was like any other morning. They were sleeping till noon. While others were anxiously waiting for the result of the Delhi University Students Union elections. For 71 responsible students from Miranda House, it was a morning in which they could be seen with brooms, gloves and sacks. Picking up countless posters littered on the campus by some very ‘respectable’ student political parties during campaigning.

The ones who were volunteering to clean the campus assembled in front of the Miranda House front gate at 6 am in the morning. They got divided into four groups. One group of ‘earth’s soldiers’ marched towards Shri Ram College of Commerce and Daulat Ram College. It was led by Nitya, the leader of the National Service Scheme from Miranda. Another group marched towards the Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station. Marya Hasan was their leader. The third group headed towards towards the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Law, with Kanupriya Awathi. The others cleaned the area along the Wall of Democracy with Nancy, Swastika and Simran Kapoor.

We finished cleaning the North Campus by around 8.30 am. Everyone assembled at the front gate of the college again. We couldn’t dump it in the recycling plant of our college, so we gave it away to the scrap dealer.

For its first initiative, No Poster Party (NPP) was a great success. It is an initiative by some students in Miranda House who hope to spread their tentacles of awareness and gather support all over Delhi University.

It has taken inspiration from ‘Being the Difference’, a student team which works for a cleaner and greener Doon School. Carrying out cleanliness, plantation or awareness drives on every Sunday, NPP’s main aim is to form a strong foundation of volunteers in Delhi. In the upcoming months, NPP will focus on conducting campaigns on cleaning walls in Delhi University. The walls have been completely spoilt by posters. They also plan to conduct cleanliness drives to generate awareness about overflowing garbage dumps in North Campus. Another initiative will be to generate awareness amongst rickshaw pullers regarding spitting on roads.
