The Shocking Numbers Behind India’s Mental Health Crisis

For an issue that affects 75 million people in our country, our conversations and perception around mental health are almost non-existent. From being shrugged off as a ‘phase’ that someone is going through to being blamed for ‘not having the will and courage to face life’ – the stigma and lack of understanding around mental health prevents many from getting the right help and a support system. The Mental Health Bill, passed in the Rajya Sabha earlier this year, is also not as ‘historic’ and ‘progressive’ as one might think. On this World Mental Day, here is a quick look at the mental health crisis we are facing:
