How My Love For Writing Helped Me Fight Tuberculosis

By Priety Singhania

I am a 23-year-old from a middle-class family in Kolkata. I am optimistic, hardworking, ambitious and a go-getter. I graduated from one of the best colleges in Kolkata. I cleared the preliminary CA and CS exams in the first attempt and completed my training in about a year. In May 2015, when it was time for me to take the CA Finals exam, I was diagnosed with pleural effusion.

Pleural effusion is a form of tuberculosis. For months, I had a high fever. I was weak, depressed and had lost weight. My thoughts troubled me more than the bacteria in my body.

At one point in time, I thought dying was a better option than living a life where everyone I knew was either clearing exams, getting placed or getting engaged. And I, who used to always be in the thick of things was sulking in a corner.

I developed an exam phobia. I started believing that I was a good-for-nothing. It was during this time that I found my love for writing. From small verses to poems, little notes to long paragraphs – I loved to write. It gave me more happiness than what I had experienced in the last 23 years of my life.

I started my blog soon after I recovered (it took me a year and a half). Later, I joined an online firm as a technical content writer. Just the feeling that came from getting out of the house to go to work while I experienced the little things around made me realise that there was more to life then clearing exams and getting placed.

I am a more positive person than I was before and my love for writing has helped me come this far. I am taking CA Final exams this November. I plan to start my own venture soon.

Life can surprise you. Just when I thought everything had been snatched from me, all of it didn’t just come back, but I also discovered myself in the process.
