This Video Reminds Us Why Every Kid On The Street Is Not Just ‘Chotu’

By Nitya Sriram:

What’s in a name? A lot, actually.

Imagine spending our lives, without names to our faces. Imagine a childhood without school, toys, goodies, festivals, three square meals, safe homes, friends, and family. It’s hard to imagine, isn’t it, because our names, memories and childhoods are so integral to shaping our identities, today?

But what about chotu at the chaiwallah‘s, or chutki selling us balloons at the traffic signal, who will have us know that theirs is a universal name, and they live with it every day. They have it and they own it, but do they actually want it?

This video addresses the ‘Chotu’ phenomenon, on point. Seamlessly using satire, it forces us to get out of our comfort zones, and see how a simple act of de-individualisation can impact millions of children’s hopes, dreams and aspirations. Watch it here:

This video was released as part of Kailash Sathyarthi Children’s Foundation’s 100 Million For 100 Million campaign, which aims to impact and mobilise 100 million children to support child activists in building a world that ends child labour and recognises the rights of all children equally.
