On the evening of December 10, all the Keralites residing in Bhopal took an initiative to organise a function as a mark of gratitude in Bhopal School of Social Sciences for their beloved CM Pinarayi Vijayan who was on his maiden visit to Madhya Pradesh. Vijayan was expected to reach the venue by 5:30 p.m. However, to everyone’s surprise, the state police approached him and requested him not to proceed for the function. Police claimed that there was a possibility of RSS workers protesting against his visit in front of the college and it would be difficult for them to handle the situation and provide security to him.
This incident signifies that it is the Sangh Parivar and not BJP, has a strong role to play in the way the Madhya Pradesh government works. This is the most unusual instance I’ve ever witnessed. If an elected CM is being denied attending a function organised by the people of his own state, then what can be more undemocratic?
The way in which the Madhya Pradesh police was made to deal with situation proves that those who stopped the CM have no understanding of the Indian Constitution. RSS cadres are known for encouraging hooliganism and communalism wherever they have a presence.
They have created an intolerant atmosphere in many BJP-ruled states, especially MP, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Gujarat. The CPI(M) government, on the other hand, has a great record of not letting this communal venom spread in their states. When the whole country was bleeding because of communal violence after the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992, West Bengal soon regained control.
Madhya Pradesh’s government is being run on orders of the shakhas and not by democratic norms. Whereas Kerala and Tripura on other hand are role models for the other states to follow. The manner in which Madhya Pradesh’s government dealt with Pinarayi Vijayan is a matter of shame for them, their citizens and the constitution.
