Little things

“I am definitely driving that red truck and going to a vacation ALONE! Just imagine the fun!” said a 17-year-old girl.

“ALONE?! That too in a truck! No way. You might be independent but you are a girl. It isn’t safe. You aren’t a guy. Ultimately if anything wrong happens, he can still manage. But society won’t let you manage it for yourself, “ said her mother.

The girl was brought up single-handedly by her mother, her father was no more alive, she had grown up with the ideals of women empowerment. But was it actually women empowerment if the word “safe” is used to warn a girl?

This is modern India. We might be learning and grasping the prospects of a women keeping her head held high ,with an independent life and career. But these little things such as a four letter word “safe” pinch us. All the time.

Here the mother isn’t narrow minded. But she is afraid.

Here the girl is a free bird. But is chained by the little things.
