Student Questions Why Exams Had To Be Postponed After A State Minister’s Death

Sir/Ma’am,

We are undergraduate students in Visvesvaraya Technological University. This is regarding the decision taken by the prestigious University after the sad and untimely demise of H.S. Mahadeva Prasad, Cooperation and Sugar Minister in the Karnataka government. We express our deep condolences.

We do not mean to hurt anyone’s feelings in any way, but the decision taken by VTU in light of this incident is totally unexpected and unhealthy. It is well known that many students come from different parts of Karnataka and other states to study engineering. They expected exams to be over by January 7 and hoped to head home in ecstasy and joy. The decision should have been taken by taking note of students’ feelings. At least feelings of nostalgia and going-to-home-after-exams could have been considered.

But as fate would have it, the University played differently. Maybe the decision of the University to stick to their decision falls under the Constitution of the institute. The decision has been taken and now it is not possible to amend it in any way. Many students are suffering due to this. With no way left, they have to cancel their train and flights tickets as well.

Showing respect for someone is absolutely fine but only when the consequences of the decision are not grave. We don’t criticise anyone’s decision and deep faith in someone. But why take a decision in such haste that it has negative consequences.

Cancellation of tickets will prove to be a huge monetary loss for the students. In this regard, we deeply condemn the sudden action taken by the University. The sole and firm request to the University and the government is to look into the matter and provide some facilities to reschedule students’ train and flight tickets without any additional charges which may apply. That would be of a great help.

Thank you
