Barely 60 kilometers from Delhi, a 25-year-old man from Ghaziabad’s Bhojpur village was allegedly beaten up and forced to drink urine as punishment during a panchayat on February 14. His crime – he was reportedly peeping into a neighbour’s house in an inebriated condition on February 10. Police have arrested four people after an FIR was lodged by the man’s wife.
The complaint by the man’s wife, according to a report in The Indian Express, says that the man was accused of peeping into a house on February 10 and of theft. In a Panchayat called on February 14, an accused woman beat the man with slippers. The accused people also forced the man to drink urine and threatened to kill him.
“There were around 100-200 people in the panchayat. The man was beaten up and forced to drink urine. [envoke_twitter_link]Thoroughly humiliated, he tried to commit suicide but was saved by the locals[/envoke_twitter_link]. Since then, he and his wife have fled the village,” Shahid Chaudhary, the gram pradhan, told Hindustan Times.
An acquaintance of the victim told Times of India that the victim was beaten up on the night of February 10 too. He was made to stand on one leg for nearly an hour and write an apology letter, a villager told Hindustan Times.
A case has been registered against the four persons under sections of the IPC related to assault, criminal intimidation, defamation, voluntarily causing hurt, and intentional insult according to reports.
