Video: A Sexist St. Stephen’s Boys Clubs Pledges To ‘Promote Misogyny’ Every Year

St. Stephen’s College is a pioneering educational institute of our country. It has been hailed as one of the more liberal and progressive institutes in the University of Delhi. However, Pinjra Tod: Break the Hostel Locks, in a Facebook post, has brought to fore that students of the Allnutt North Gentlemen Association (ANGA), in St. Stephen’s College, take a sexist oath every year on February 14, Valentine’s Day. The Facebook post also has a video in which we can hear students proudly saying, “to promote among them all misogyny.”

According to the students of the college, it’s an age-old tradition for the male hostellers to take the oath. The video shows that the oath is taken out in the open, within the campus. This makes us wonder why the faculty and alumni of the institute have never spoken up about this. It is appalling how such an event has never been brought to attention over these years.

Several other questions also need to be asked at this juncture. Is sexism accepted and promoted as a value at institutions like St Stephen’s? Moreover, should such unabashed display of misogyny be allowed in educational spaces in the name of tradition and humour?
