The Agony Of End Terms And How To Deal With It

A man writing on a notepad.
Editor’s note: This story is in response to Youth Ki Awaaz’s topic for this week – #BeatExamStress to share some gyaan with students preparing for their finals on coping with exam stress, study techniques, or just how our education system needs to get exams right. If you have an experience to share, write to us here.

Examinations are not easy and neither is the entire process of dealing with the stress that accompanies it. Having taken what seems like over a million examinations myself, I can totally attest to this fact. I am a “CBSE product” (as they call it) and by the time that school got over, I had taken an ungodly number of unit tests, class tests, terminal exams and final exams (trust me, you do not want me to get started on post-school exams!). The finals were the deadliest of all nightmares – the father of all stress givers and the ultimate test of time. Why? Well, to begin with, finals had the maximum amount of weightage in the summative evaluation. Secondly, marks obtained in the finals decided if we passed the class with our friends or stayed back with juniors! Last, and definitely the worst, was the fact that all the relatives always wanted to know our scores in the finals!

Dealing With The Finals Ki Tension

Dealing with the stress of these finals was never easy. I still remember how I was always sleepy (on other nights insomnia was an issue, however, for some reason sleep came like air the night before the paper – in abundance and always around!), on the edge and totally confused a night before the exams. I found that the best way to deal with the fatigue of over-stressing was to take proper sleep. Trust me, you do not want to meddle with your sleep routine if you want to complete your revisions thoroughly. Sleeping properly benefits in a various ways. To name a few:

Furthermore, creating a time table and strictly following it is another mantra to complete the syllabus on time. As clichéd as it may sound (stop rolling your eyes already!) – it works. Segregate the syllabus and allot the portions a fixed time duration, abide by it and you will be done within the time available.

Another interesting way to crack the finals with all awesomeness is the secret funda of going through the blueprints provided by CBSE and analyzing the weightage of marks put on different chapters. Believe me, we often ignore these documents provided to us by the school but these are of great use. Even if you run out of time due to some reason, by the 11th hour, you will be sure to have covered the topics that bear more marks. This will not only keep the stress at bay but will also help you score more!

In a nutshell, start preparing in advance, sleep well, study systematically and #BeatExamStress

All the best!
