Who’s Bodofa – The Father Of Bodos?

Born on 31st March 1956 to Mr. Mongalram Brahma and Ms. Lefsri Brahma in a village called Boragari near Dotma a small township in Kokrajhar district of BTAD, Assam. He was fifth and youngest child and was called “Thopen” with love during his childhood.

Education:
Schooling – Dotma High School, Kokrajhar High School. Passed HSLC in the year 1975 in the first division with letter marks in mathematics, scoring 67% aggregate.
College: BSc in Physics, Cotton College and then MSc from Gauhati University (1986) and simultaneously BA from Kokrajhar College in the year 1985.

Early Political Life:
Elected as President of Goalpara District Students’ Union in 1978 – 79
Vice President of ABSU (1981 – 1983)
President of ABSU (Since 1986…)

He worked for the rights of the community, which he believed to be losing not merely its culture but also its political rights. Under his leadership, the ABSU agreed to include political issues as part of its agenda. He and his followers mobilized Bodo youths at grass-root level and in 1987 when All Assam Students Union (AASU) was losing momentum, he and his colleagues started a movement to create a separate state within Assam, to be called BODOLAND.

He believed that literature is the identity of the community and was himself a writer of poems, short stories and literary articles. Besides, he also wrote articles and essays on science. He was also the Editor – In – Chief of “BIDANGSRI”, the English – Bodo magazine for the session of 1977 – 78. He went on to be the editor of “Orkhi”, a news magazine in Bodo from Kokrajhar.

The title of Bodofa (Father of the Bodos) was posthumously conferred upon Mr. Upendranath Brahma on 8 May 1990 in recognition of his vision and leadership.
