A Survey For Those Marginalised In The Music Industry

Let’s get it out of the way early: the music industry, like every other in our patriarchal society, is sexist. We all know that. It’s especially prevalent in India where, within certain segments of society our culture forces women to get married by a certain age, not stay out past a certain hour, take care of the house and family, and be suppressed by the weight of what is right and wrong in the eyes of the ‘community’. In the UK, female producers represent less than 4% of the industry. In the US, it’s less than 5%. 1 in 5 members of the Australian Performing Rights Association are female. There is no such collection of data for the Indian music industry.

At Wild City, we believe in equality across the board. Ensuring that we remain not just diverse and inclusive in the office, our content must also be a reflection of our ideals.

With that in mind, we’re initiating a new platform to support the development of skills for women who aspire to be or are already working in the music industry in India. The aim is to ensure we collect data that will steer the direction that the content will take, ensuring that the program is relevant and intuitive.

We want to work towards creating a space where marginalised communities get an equal say in the Indian music space and this is our first step.

We’ve put together a simple survey of just eight questions and promise it’s quick and easy to complete. So we would hugely appreciate it if you could take just 90 seconds to send over your thoughts via this survey.

And isn’t it time for a quick coffee break anyway?
