Baroda, an architectural and historic delight

 

Baroda, the city with picturesque architectural beauty is one of the most preferred holiday destinations. Located on the banks of Vishwamitri River, the history of this city lies embedded deep in the walls and stones of the buildings of this place. The city was once ruled by Gaekwad Dynasty which belongs to the Maratha Confederacy.  Hindus, Mughals, and Pathans have also ruled this place.

Today, Baroda is one of the most sought after places and one of the main reasons for the same is to visit UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pavagadh and Champaner.

Laxmi Vilas Palace: This was once the residence of the royal family of Baroda and had been built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1890. It is built in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style which means that it was built keeping in mind the Muslim designs using the Indian materials which were materialized and put together by the British architects that were present in India. In the interior we can see a lot more of the British touch wherein, we can see Belgium stained glass windows, water fountains, chandeliers, etc.

Sursagar Lake: The lake is situated in the middle of the city and is till date one of the major attraction for all the visitors. With concrete walls and stone banks surrounding the lake, people can sit and gaze at the lake. Vadodara Municipal Corporation has also built a 120ft. a tall statue of Lord Shiva. The statue id constructed in the standing position and is constructed in the middle of the lake.

Aurobindo Ashram: Aurobindo Ashram is a community center which was founded by a famous yoga guru Aurobindo Ghose who was also a philosopher and also a freedom fighter. One can take a day’s break from the hustle of life and come here to de-stress and relax. The community mainly focuses on removing stress from the day to day life of people by practicing yoga, meditation, and many other traditional ways.

Khanderao Market: This is one of the famous markets present in the city. One can find everything in this market starting and is one of the most vibrant parts of the city. The building present in the market is said to be a gifted to the public on the occasion of 25 years completion of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III’s administration and is also one of the busiest streets of the city.
