A recent report by IndiaSpend suggests that an epic 99.38% of Indians stay in areas which have stringent laws of protection for cows. As of March 2017, cow slaughter has been prohibited in 84% of India’s states and union territories (UTs), which account for 99.38% of the country’s population.
There are some interesting facts in their report too.
The oldest laws on cow slaughter ban come from states of Jammu & Kashmir and Manipur where the former rulers enforced them in 1932 and 1936 respectively; i.e. before India’s independence.
80% of the states which amended or added cow protection laws after 1969’s Congress split, were ruled by BJP or Janata Party.
In 13 states, cow slaughter is a non-bailable offence.
