BJP’s Defeat In Bengal A Rejection Of Divisive Politics

The figures say it all — A total rejection of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the plains. From bike rallies to fiery speeches to scathing attacks, the BJP had gone all out to ensure if not a victory, at least a better figure in the polls.

The only option left with the BJP now is to crib about how the Trinamool unleashed terror during the polls. However, the claims of the party are to be taken with a pinch of salt. If BJP was the primary contender in the plains, the GJM was a bigger threat in the Hills. Then why did the TMC not unleash terror in the Hills? Any answer? Well, it would be improper to jump to a conclusion but the claims somehow do not match with the real-time situation.

Keeping aside the claims of the Opposition parties, what is important to focus is the defeat of the BJP in the elections. Out of a total of 64 seats in the plains, it bagged only three. A complete wash down of Amit Shah’s efforts down the drain to bring about a saffron change in the state.

Bengal is a state that has never answered to divisive politics on the basis of religion. An ever-yielding state but when it comes to a division on the basis of religion, Bengal stands strong and gives a befitting reply. Moreover, this was a civic poll and the BJP spoke about everything else in the run up to the polls other than development. In civic polls, citizens expect promises of their civic needs to be fulfilled and not bother about which party appeases the Muslims.

With this result, the speculations of BJP doing great in the 2018 Panchayat polls too can be laid to rest. The civic polls were a major platform for the BJP to showcase their political prowess which it has lost. Now, only a miracle can save it from yet another debacle in the Panchayat elections.
