Project Checkmate was launched by sixteen year old Devanshi Rathi in April, 2016. It is a non-profit initiative to teach chess to the underprivileged and blind children in New Delhi. Devanshi, a chess player herself, wanted to do something to create a positive change in her society. So, she started the project in an attempt to make a difference doing something that she loved. Over the course of the year a variety of events have been organised for the students.
Starting with the Delhi State in May,2016, the project took steps to make chess popular amongst these students. Chess would help them be more focused in their life, improve their concentration, and develop holistically. It would also introduce them to the mainstream society. Competing against seasoned players, the students would be exposed to a better life. They would have something to look forward to doing in their lives.
Under the project, the students have also attended a Grandmaster camp, played a simultaneous with an AGM, won national medals, met some titled players and got an opportunity to learn from them, and received a lot of mentoring sessions with the founder. Devanshi also wrote a book on chess called-‘Chess Notes’, a step to make their learning easier. They also participated in a variety of local chess tournaments.
The project focuses on an overall education for these students and wants to make them better individuals who can contribute to their society and to the world. Chess is a game that can be played by all and it is a fun and interactive way to engage these bright minds. The project is now looking to expand even further.
