Common Admission Test Exam Challenges

Common Admission Test (CAT) is the top most admission exam in the field of management. The admissions to the best B-Schools like Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) is made through CAT Exam. Apart from IIMs, other top MBA colleges in India also considers the percentile score of the CAT Exam.

 

During the preparation of Common Admission Test, certain challenges emerge that need to be addressed in time to score a good percentile in the main exam. In this article, we will focus on the Contextual, Technical and Behavioural Aspects of each section of the CAT exam.

 

Common Admission Test Exam Pattern:

 

CAT Exam pattern includes four sections which are as follows-

 

1) Quantitative Ability

2) Data Interpretation

3) Logical Ability

4) Verbal and Reading Comprehension

 

1) Quantitative Ability-

 

Quantitative Ability section involves the topics like Algebra, Modern Math, Arithmetic and Geometry. The questions in this section are articulated in such a manner so as to check the management skills of the candidate. The questions of different topics are framed in a different pattern. For example- In Geometry, the questions are framed to judge the ability of a person to comprehend pictorial presentations. In Arithmetic, the candidate’s ability to understand patterns and symmetry is checked.

 

2) Logical Ability-

 

This section is one of the most important section to judge the managerial acumen of the candidate. This section is defined by the ability to realize the logic by the candidate so that the candidate can take the rational decisions with the boundaries of his knowledge. The section involves the topics like coding, arrangements, logic trees, etc. Logical Ability is kind of challenge that defines the analytical component of the candidate’s mind.

 

3) Data Interpretation-

 

The questions in this section are based on the pictorial bars, graphs, charts, pie charts, numerical tables and other combinations to analyse the candidate’s ability to solve the challenges of a similar kind at the managerial positions. The challenge here is to precisely analyse the data and come out with the correct solution.

 

4)  Verbal and Reading Comprehension-

 

This section involves the ability of the candidate to handle the challenges about the topics like critical reasoning, grammar and reading comprehension. The challenges faced in this section are the application of reasoning abilities and strong communication.

 

Apart from the sectional challenges, there are other contextual challenges that a candidate face during the CAT exam which is as follows-

 

Prioritization- Prioritization is nothing but proper time utilization. This is an another kind of managerial challenge that is indirectly judged via exam.

 

Strategy- Preparation without a right strategy is futile. The another big challenge is the formation of a strategy that fits in as per the requirement of the exam.

 

Conflict Resolution- It is a very common challenge that every aspirant faces that is to resolve the conflicts arising from within, or we can call it as the crisis management. In the context of the preparation, this includes the perseverance in the preparation.
