As the recent article in ‘The Hindu’ describes the discount provided by medical colleges in Karnataka for medical seats under NRI/Management quota, it is what which should not be. It happens every year during the admission season for Medical admission in India.

Headline of an article in ‘The Hindu’

Providing medical seats to those who have money in their pocket and letting them start their journey of being a doctor without having perspective knowledge to study medical Sciences has always been a concern for medical education in India.

More and more reservation decreases the chances of a deserving student to get admitted in an institute where he/she wants to be. Thereby decreasing the chances of good medical education in India. However providing reservation on the basis of cast, minority is another topic of discussion, reservation on the basis of wealth status should not be permitted specially in a field which is directly related to public health.

Before now , counselling for these seats under NRI/Management quota used to be without any qualification exam. This is the first time these seats are being allotted under the common counselling on the basis of NEET Score. But still reservation for wealthy aspirant should be talked once again and its effect on medical education and public health should be taken under consideration.
