In 1935, Subhas Chandra Bose published the first part of The Indian Struggle, recounting the history of the Indian independence movement. Bose was in exile in Europe when he wrote the book, following his arrest by the colonial government for revolutionary activities.
He had to largely rely on memory as he did not have access to documentary material, and when he arrived in Karachi in 1934 in defiance of the ban on his entry into India, he was arrested and the original manuscript of the book seized. When the book was published in London the following year, the British were quick to ban it in India. The second part of The Indian Struggle, recounting the struggle from 1935 to 1942, was published in 1942.
The book is an extraordinary account by one of India’s greatest revolutionaries, and it reflects Bose’s own thoughts about independence, the nature of the freedom struggle, and the colonial rule. Today, it is a testimony to how the freedom struggle evolved, the challenges it faced, and provides a deep insight into Bose’s own views.
