The Fascinating History Of Christmas Cake

Christmas is one of the most special celebrations which celebrated worldwide.  Besides exchanging gifts and getting together with the people we love, Christmas is also that time when special recipes are made. There are some specific foods that come with the typical Christmas feel and often creates a lot of happy holiday nostalgia. The grand celebration of Christmas have been carried down for centuries but do you really know where it started actually?

Gingerbread

The gingerbread is the much loved Christmas fun. Kids really adore it and decorating a nice gingerbread house has been a staple Christmas family food tradition for a long time. The custom of making Gingerbread man was hugely popular in Elizabethan England as women of England used to bake this delicacy for their men and this cake was known as a sign of appreciation. The ingredients used for making this treat were flour, butter, ginger, baking soda, ground cloves, cinnamon for flavors and sugar and molasses were used for adding sweetness. But now the question is who made it a staple for the Christmas celebration? Well, it was German Bakery who exclusively made it for celebrating Christmas and it is believed that during the same span of time Martin Luthar also started celebrating Christmas with candlelit Christmas trees. The custom of making Gingerbread house fully exploded the globe when Brothers Grim released their famous Hansel and Gretel  Story in 1912.

Candy Canes

Candy canes are another sweet delicacy that is highly associated with the celebration of Christmas. Now you might be wondering to know the history behind it. Well, this very custom came from Germany around 1970 when the children in the local church choir received candies that came in the shape of Shepherd’s Crook and these candies were served with the purpose to keep the children quiet. In the beginning of 13th Century, a famous candy manufacturer in Indiana thought about adding peppermint flavor to the candy canes and used red strips to make them look really attractive. This particular sweet delicacy is still popular during the eve of Christmas.

 

Buche De Noel

Another hugely popular Christmas special delicacy is Buche De Noel or the Christmas Log. It is a special type of cake which is specifically baked for the occasion of Christmas. The tradition of making this particular Christmas cake is very closely connected to the burning of the Yule Log. Although no one still knows when the preparation of this particular cake started. This particular cake recipe includes the ingredients like eggs, sugar, flour, melted butter, chocolate butter cream, coffee powder and hot water. It can be decorated with different ways that include candied cherries, green sugar and different other types of candies.

Eggnog

Eggnog is also very popular Christmas special delicacy and it is the oldest beverage also. Now the question that might pop up into your mind is how old this recipe is. Some people believe that the first recipe of Eggnog appeared in the 16th century but it was popular under the name of “Posset” or “Syllabub”  and in many countries, it is also known as “Milk Punch”. This particular dessert is made out of eggs, brandy, rum, milk and white sugar.
