Happy(?) Republic day

Hey There!

“Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it.” -George Bernard Shaw

Happy Republic day! This is a mandatory festive wish, because according to me all we have done this year is destroy the sanctity of this day and undermine the values enshrined in our Constitution. Republic day is celebrated every year on the 26th of January to honor the day on which the Constitution of India came into effect. Some of the values enshrined in the constitution are- FRATERNITY- assuring the dignity of the individual, brotherhood, freedom of speech,  LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship, justice. Name one of these fundamental values that have not been trampled upon in the recent past?

How do we still have the right to celebrate a ‘happy’ republic day, after all the lynching, rapes, murders, outrageous bans and protests etc.?

Yet every year we celebrate this day and independence day without fail and tell everybody who will listen that  we are proud of our nation and boast about our accomplishments and progress.

If the members of the constituent assembly could see what this nation has done with the Constitution that took them 2 years 11 months and 18 days to write,
The constitution to which they gave their sweat, blood and tears,
The constitution which is an evidence and result of the struggles of our forefathers, they’d be bitterly disappointed.

It was our responsibility as their successors and sons and daughters of this nation to uphold that constitution and respect the values enshrined in it. We have failed them and more importantly, we have failed ourselves.
