We met Nisha back when we were filming our video “Fit Is Not A Body Type”, and her story was so inspiring that we decided to make another video on her to raise funds for Maharashtra’s wheelchair basketball team.
If we had only one word to use to describe Nisha Gupta it would be – “baller”. At the age of 18, she fell off a wall and fractured her spine, which left her paralysed from the waist down. She tried everything from rehab to medical treatments to even superstitious beliefs but her condition did not improve. She was told that she would have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.
Nisha lost all hope and was severely depressed for about four years. That’s when she joined Nina Foundation and met other people who were just like her and made new friends. They motivated her to make something out of her life and learn to be more independent.
That’s when she started getting into sports slowly. She learnt how to swim because that was the best kind of exercise for people with her condition. She then moved on to basketball and today she represents India internationally in basketball and nationally in swimming. Sports and fitness gave a new meaning to her life. She has learnt how to live her life independently but India’s poor conditions for the differently-abled and lack of support from the government are huge setbacks. Her aim in life is to open a rehab home for people like her and make her country more disabled friendly.
She is one of the many players on her team, and they require sports wheelchairs to continue playing the sport they love to represent our country.
