I admire Nikita Azad’s motives to de-stigmatize menstruation. While her wearing it as a badge is bold and can be perceived as being defiant, it was a simple action in normalizing menstruation and going one step further in initiating a conversation about it. Growing up, while I was taught by my mother about this being about a girl becoming a woman, I still felt the need to hide it even from my own brother at home, or other students at school. For a while, I even hid it from colleagues at work. Not any more though. I never understood why it’s so hush-hush and why we need to use code words like ‘red rain’ or ‘chums’ etc. If this is part of life, why isn’t it part of conversations? We each have milestones in our lives. The start of a girl’s menses is one as well. So why does it become such an elephant in the room? If bringing conversations out of the shadow is being bigdi hui, then so be it. I too am a bigdi hui ladki.
