Valentine’s Day In India: An Excuse To Be Slaves Of The Market, Or Reject It Outright?

Why do we not consider that Valentine’s Day is also influenced by the impact of the market forces? We skirt our way around this issue by expressing our hearty emotions. However, the day’s very commercial aspect does boosts the value of the occasion – an occasion which was once solely popular in the West.

Young souls, influenced by their physical vigour and the western culture, find themselves connected to the day due to the opportunities it offers. Just as gravitational forces drag us towards a star, this day’s customs (like exchanging flowers, chocolates and other kinds of gifts) also seem to directly pull couples towards well-arranged markets and posh malls.

Logically speaking, however, this day may special for the open-minded western society – but certainly, it shouldn’t be for our indigenous traditional society, which is even guarded by the so-called anti-Romeo squads. A recent approval of this practical truth has come from the a set of advisory issued for the students and the parents. The Lucknow University has issued an advisory stating that classes will remain suspended, and no extra classes, practical examinations and cultural programmes will take place on February 14, 2018 – to allegedly guard it against the westernising influence of the occasion. After all, it is better to dive deep into the holy waters than to take a quick look at the throbbing hearts. Similarly, I think there was a time when there used to be a ‘Love Lane‘ at the University of Allahabad, but it doesn’t exist any longer, to the best of my knowledge.

Notwithstanding this, it’s also true that markets fetch crowds mostly during festivals, when sales go up unexpectedly. Surely, the market experts must have devised ways and means to propagate the occasion in diverse ways in order to attract modern consumers. After all, they know very well what a significant portion of the young blood become too involved to make this day quite extraordinary.

This is definitely a good time for two individuals to take pleasure in the merrier moments in a special manner. After all, this is really how they envision their relationship to evolve on this special day.

Thus, it becomes obvious that these people are not going to miss the day in favour of other considerations. In fact, they wait for this day after the onset of the fresh year to make mutually-inclusive plans for each other.
