One of the most unique features of SOS Children’s Villages is the home-like environment and the long-term support given to every child under our care up to the age of 25.
SOS India has given a new life to many once parentless and abandoned children. Manish is one such child.
Before coming to SOS India, Manish was not only abandoned but was also brutally thrown in to a field of sugarcane at the darkest hour of the night, where his foot was eaten by a wild animal and was damaged severely. He was dropped by someone at the SOS Children’s Village, Varanasi and ever since then, he has been a part of the SOS India family. The police were informed to file a missing report of the child, but despite all attempts to trace his parents, no one turned up.
Manish’s struggle to treat his foot continued for many long years, where he travelled incessantly from Varanasi to Bombay to get the best treatment. During this period, he could not study at all for two years but resumed after coming back from Bombay. It was in 2016 that he was operated and finally got rid of his defect. SOS India undertook all medical expenses towards his full recovery.
After the successful surgery, Manish was welcomed home and was looked after by his mother and all co-workers at the Village.
“I want to continue my education now,” said Manish.
He did not take any tuition and was only guided by his mother and the Village director in his studies. His determination and consistent efforts to perform well helped him secure 95% marks in class 5. He also received an achiever’s certificate by the SOS Hermann Gmeiner School, Varanasi.
Today, Manish is a happy 13-year-old boy who not only has won over all his challenges but has also set an example for many others. He now not only excels in academics but also participates in various sports. He actively takes part in all games and activities organised by the village.
Recently, Manish participated in a cricket match and performed brilliantly. It was after a gap of two years that everyone saw him running and enjoying with other children. He is now a confident boy who is not afraid of trying new things in life.
This is one story. There are many more like Manish in this country who need love. Every contribution made to SOS Children’s Villages of India is eligible for tax deduction under Section 80G.
