By Passing A Bill To Protect Party Funds From Scrutiny, Is Modi Allying With The Corrupt?

In 2010-11, when the whole nation stood against corruption, the revolutionary movement is quite unforgettable. After that, the general elections of 2014 was fought on nearly the same issues – that is, corruption and black money.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked for 100 days to bring back black money. In brief, I can say that the environment was quite revolutionary back then.

Now in 2018, I feel that Modi’s fight against black money was just a show-off, and I have reasons for my belief.

1. No big action action seems to have been taken by PM Modi in the last four years against the corrupt.

2. On March 14, 2018, BJP-led NDA government tabled and passed a Bill in the Lok Sabha related to the foreign funding to political fronts. The Bill, passed on Wednesday, seeks to exempt political parties from being scrutinised for the funds they may receive from abroad.

The Bill seeks to amend the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) which aims to regulate and curb the funding of political parties by sources from abroad. The amendment was done in retrospective manner – that is, there can be no investigation of foreign funding which parties received from and after 1976.

Earlier in 2016, BJP had amended the same act to ease the process of foreign funding of Indian parties.

As the amendment is of a retrospective nature, it will help both the BJP and Congress, as both were found guilty of breaching FCRA Act. In 2014, the Delhi High Court had given a decree that indicted both the parties of having breached the provisions of the FCRA Act.

Instead of taking strong action against corruption and the corrupt, the Modi government is blatantly helping them. Modi’s fight against corruption was a show-off. After all, he didn’t take any action against corruption and black money. Instead, the Modi government is doing such things that may potentially boost corruption.
